Trial Reels let you test a Reel on people who don't follow you before your followers ever see it. It's a low-pressure way to try a new idea.
How they work
- Make a Reel as normal.
- Turn on the Trial toggle before you share it.
- Only non-followers see it. It doesn't appear on your grid or Reels tab, though a follower could still come across it if someone sends it to them.
- After about 24 hours you'll see views, likes, comments and shares.
- Then you choose: share it to everyone, or keep it archived. You can also let Instagram share it automatically if it performs well. Reports say that decision comes within about 72 hours.
Who can use it
- It launched Dec 2024 for professional accounts.
- Reports from 2025 list a public account with 1,000+ followers as the requirement Check in-app.
- Schedulers can now post Trial Reels too. Meta's API supports manual or automatic, performance-based "graduation".
TikTok and YouTube
- TikTok has no direct equivalent that we could confirm as of Oct 2026. The nearest options are posting as "Only you" or "Friends" to check a draft, which doesn't test with real strangers.
- YouTube offers Test & Compare for thumbnails and titles on long-form videos. It's not a Shorts trial.
