Here's every Instagram size you'll actually use, in one place.
| Format | Ratio | Recommended pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed photo, portrait | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | The long-time default. Still safe everywhere. |
| Feed photo, tall | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | Supported since mid-2025 (announced by Adam Mosseri). Matches most phone cameras. |
| Feed photo, square | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Still works, but the grid crops it. |
| Feed photo, landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | The widest the API accepts. Small on screen. |
| Carousel | Same as feed | 1080 × 1350 or 1080 × 1440 | Use one ratio for every slide (see article 3). |
| Reels | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Full screen. |
| Stories | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Full screen. |
| Profile grid thumbnail | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 area | The grid went from squares to taller rectangles in early 2025. |
| Reel cover | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | The grid crops it to the middle 3:4. |
- Width: Meta's developer docs accept images 320–1440 px wide in JPEG and sRGB. Designing at 1080 wide is the usual safe choice.
- Grid crop: A 9:16 Reel cover loses about 240 px from both the top and the bottom on the grid. Keep faces and titles in the middle.
